CT 7.2.2: Write a short story that shows how setting helps shape character
I shook in fear as the lightning echoed across the darkness.Hour by hour disasters have been hitting Earth wickedly destroying all we knew.The dim light of the hologram was the only source of light. “I'm Shara Cleveland reporting to you live from CNN, as we watch in terror as the third chunk of natural disasters hits Buffalo, New York.” “BEEEEEEP,” random sounds echoed through the hologram, and suddenly the screen became black.I watch in shock as I realized the storm is going to hit us.Oh god!
“Zack, Jack”!”The storm it's going to hit us.We've got to leave!” I bumped into a cloaked figure, hidden by the dark lighting of the cavern.
“Oh,it’s just you guys come on,”I said!
“Kevin,what's going on?You're so pale.I've never seen you like this,”exclaimed Jack!
“Get in the truck NOW!I'll explain on the way.”
It had been three days since we fled and all that was behind us was ruins of America's great civilization.Our entire memories crushed by the wrath of nature.What humanity has created since the dawn of time.Was completely annihilated deserted ruins of houses and buildings broken down that looked as if Godzilla himself had chopped it in half. We had only one goal in mind after this disaster, destroy the Power Core. Our lives had changed by the power core, it was created by all the world renowned scientists. Their plan to execute and put an end to the horrors of World War III. When they realized, their machine had the potential to do much more evil than good though by then it was too late. It caused ice the size of basketballs heavier than bowling balls down on the building killing everyone in it.By the time the first responders arrived the building was demolished.My father was one of those scientists who risked his life to recreate the world, but died in hate and resentment. I wanted to avenge him for misery and pain that machine had caused this world and to me. My father had lost all his glory and was blamed for all he had done. Now I had to destroy this machine for once and for all, the world depends on it. Now,I will go and destroy the power core, but this time I have a secret weapon, friends. Either way it was going to be a hard run.All we had at this point was a Toyota Corolla with shady brown seats infested with moss and other unknown plants that I don't even want to think about. Yet,Zack still had the capability to sleep on those sets if you could call them that.
“I'm so hungry.Can we just stop to eat,” Zack said as he slept on the car's seat.
“We are about the risk our lives to save the world and possibly die and you want to have lunch,” I said angrily!
“Well it's not my fault we haven't eaten in 2 days.Just because some spaceship didn't pick us up like the others to take us to Cerberus.Doesn't mean that we have to become all heroic and save all of post-apocalyptic Earth,” Zack yelled!
“He does have a point.Besides we don’t even have any money and how will this help us.We could just run away,like the others,”Jack said.
“Have you guys forgotten we are not just doing this for ourselves,the whole forgotten world is depending on us.So many people were forgoten here and my father is held responsible for those deaths.I have to destroy what he created I JUST HAVE TO!”,I said in hate
“The thing about the storm hitting us was just a wake-up call to get us started on this.I don't know why I didn't start before,”I explained!
“It’s okay Kevin!Calm down this isn't your father's fault,”said Jack.
“I know,but it's just all the time I've spent hiding.Everyone had taunted me blaming me for what my father had done.”
“Kevin I know that many bad things have happened and everyone has held you responsible.You do realize,though that we are your friends and we’re helping you destroy the power core,”Jack replied.
“I know,I just got out of hand I'm all good now,”I said.
“Uh guys?Could I possibly interrupt this amazing emotional make up and tell you one thing.There is freaking fireball heading right for us!”Zack exclaimed.
“EVERYONE GET OUT,”I roared!
Just as we leaped out of the car,a strong wave of blistering heat greeted us.Hurling me into a rough and hard as rock sand dune.As my vision finnally cleared,a vast structure apperaed in my view it was large and wide.Suddenly my childhood flashed before my eyes, everything I had expirienced, flooded into my mind.This was same building my father died in and the same building where the power core is still housed.Everything all the deaths,all of the destruction caused by what was in that building.
“KEVIN,KEVIN,where are you,”Jack and Zack hollered in the distance!
“I'm here near the huge building,”I replied!
“We see you,coming down,”they answered.
The relief spread out through my chest.My friends they had found me,spontaneously a sharp pain shot up through my leg.I looked down startled to see the busted structure of my legs,it looked to be broken possibly injured.I struggled to get to my feet using the buildings walls rigid structure to hold on and pull me up.As I looked up at the blazing sun two distant figures emerged into my field of vision, sprinting down the sand dunes that separated me and them.Just as I regained my senses.I noticed how the building had several distinct pillars which if obstructed would bring down the building,but also the powercore with in it.
“Kevin we’re almost there,”Zack cried.
“We’re here Kevin what happened,”Jack said.
“I don't know I just remember jumping out of the car and waking up here,”I replied.
“Well you had us worried there as we were coming to get you,”Zack said.
“Well we’re all here.Now what is this building anyway?”Jack said questionably.
“I'm not sure guys,but I...I think this is the building where the power core is held,”I stammered.
I almost choked,this was the building we had traversed across America for.All we had done to destroy this building.Finally arriving brought me to think how were we supposed to destroy this colossal building.Our human bodies compared to this ginormous structure,looked like a speck of dirt in a living room.
”Guys you do realize this so impossible.This building has walls that are about 20 feet tall,”said Jack.
“Also note that even if we get inside we’ll have no idea where the power core is and how to get there,”said Zack.
As Zack talked about the possible problems we might have getting into the building.My self-esteem was lowering wondering why I even embarked on this journey.My mountain of confidence and morale that towered slowly submerged.No,there must be a way we can breach thses walls and destroy the power core,but why should we even try.My friends unaware of the raging war going on over my self-esteem.Continued onward with their heated discusion.
“Guys...GUYS”,I yelled!
“What,”they replied?
“Instead of argueing we should try and look for supplies.You guys should go look around and see if you if you can find anything,”I said.
They both left in haste to look around the truck we took to get here.I walked around to see if I could figure out anything about the buildings walls.They’re architecture was unlike anything I had ever seen before.The walls seemed to radiate a peculiar red glow.
“Kevin,KEVIN I think you might want to see this,”Jack hollered.
“What guys this better be important.I've got to show you something too…’”I said.
I froze in the spot as I realized what Jack had called me for,the trunk of our car was wide open.As I looked in I saw C4’s,Emps(Electro Magnetic Pulse),and other weapons I saw only in video games.These weapons could change everything,our whole chance of succeding exceding way past .5%.
“Oh my gosh how did you guys find this?”I questioned.
“Oh we didn't find this you did,”Zack answered.
“Wait...what?”I asked.
“Remember when we were in a hurry to leave the hide-out.Well when we were leaving you took one of the militaries weaponized cars,”said Jack.
“And the truck had weapons cool right.I've never touched or seen these weapons in person before,”Zack continued.
“Well guys I have something cool to show you too come on,”I asserted.
As we walked down the deserted pathway in the uninhabited sandy desert.I noticed strangely placed palm trees in an organized pattern,as if placed that way on purpose.Also I observed interesting patterns of complex pictures in the wall.I assumed that maybe the wall had to be solved in a puzzle,but I had a way around that.
“Ok guys so you see the wall and how it emits strange energy.I think that's because the wall is actually holographic.Though still acts like a wall.So I thought with the EMP’s we can create a hole in the wall to get through.Then with the C4’s we can take down those pillars because they’re holding up the whole fortress and that will bring down the building on the Power Core.”I explained.
“Wow Kevin applause can't believe you came up with that,”Jack applauded.
“Kevin you seem different you speak with a more older confident tone now,”Zack said.
“I guess its because now I have hope.we’ll attack in a few minutes.”I declared.
I gathered my materials and weapons as we got ready to attack.I wasn't sure how this was going to play out out,but I had hope.
“Ok Jack on the count of 3 I want you to throw the EMP’s at the wall,1,2,3,”I screamed!
“Hustle,hustle everyone get through,”Jack stammered.
“Now everyone attach 2 C4’s at every pillar,”I ordered.
As I placed my C4’s I looked more strategical places to put them so I could maximize the impact.Luckily due to my many experiences of playing “Call of Duty”.I knew precisely what to do and how to do it.
“Now everyone RUN I’ll activate the explosives,”I yelled!As my vision slowly faded away into the darkness.
……
“You're okay son what you and your crew did was amazing and I honor you for that,”a gentle voice whispered.
The man with the gentle voice carried me,a familar acute piece of pain spread throughout my whole body.As he carried me a gentle sound of a helicopter grew louder and closer.At the time the helicopter took off I saw two other helicopters nearby with people like the man in them,possibly my friends were in their.I hoped.
1 Month After Recovery
The world has finally recovered after the dark days of the past.It's seems as if all of Earth was just reborn.Construction had started and new buildings with superior technology emerged from the ground.As the world flourished,many aircrafts from the distant artifical planet Cerberus came to see what had become of us.Most of them, startled to see us rebuilding creating hope out darkness.After that day where my friends and journeyed something changed in me I became more outgoing,a stronger,better more confident person.Im starting to believe now that as long as you believe you can achieve the immposible.I know that probably sounds like something on a cat poster,but its true.This expirience has changed me,the world all of it had heard about some 13 year old boy who saved the world.They regared me as some kind of hero a savior in fact the president spoke about me and awarded me the title of The Legend.Though they dont actually know the true heroes.My friends they stuck with me and comforted me in times of sorrow,here they are now,Jack was running in he horizon on the newly paved sidewalk.
“Hey Kevin the aircraft it finally came to take you home to Cerberus,”Jack said gasping for air.
“Tell them no.This here is my real home,”I replied.
“Huh,I knew you would say that!”Jack said grinning.
“Any ways Zack said he wanted your help on the rebuilding of the White House.You know because you want to be an architect when you grow up.The way things are going you’ll probably be president,”Jack added.
“Wow”,I said laughing.
“Also you know that weird news reporter we made fun of,Shara Cleveland's I think,well she got fired.Apparently she said the wrong report about a storm hitting some city.”Jack said.
“That's just wow,just wow,”I said as I laughed hysterically.
